Walvis Bay & Sandwich Harbour
Where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean — flamingos, dolphins, and the most dramatic coastline in Southern Africa.
Namibia's Coastal Gem
Walvis Bay sits on the central Atlantic coast of Namibia, just 30 km south of Swakopmund. While Swakopmund draws visitors with its German colonial architecture and adrenaline activities, Walvis Bay is the gateway to Namibia's most extraordinary coastal experiences — the RAMSAR-protected wetlands of Sandwich Harbour, world-class birdwatching, and marine wildlife encounters.
The lagoon supports one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Southern Africa, providing critical habitat for thousands of migratory birds. The surrounding landscape — where towering orange dunes cascade directly into the cold Atlantic — creates a visual spectacle found nowhere else on Earth.
Top Experiences
Sandwich Harbour 4x4 Excursion
Where monumental sand dunes plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Accessible only by 4x4 at low tide, this RAMSAR-protected wetland is one of Namibia's most spectacular natural wonders. Professional guides navigate the treacherous beach route — attempting it independently is extremely dangerous.
Flamingo Lagoon & Birdwatching
The Walvis Bay lagoon supports massive flocks of greater and lesser flamingos — up to 50,000 birds at peak season. The mudflats also attract pelicans, cormorants, terns, and rare migratory waders. The salt works on the southern edge create vivid pink and orange pools.
Dolphin & Seal Catamaran Cruise
Sail from the Walvis Bay waterfront on a luxury catamaran past Pelican Point. Bottlenose and Heaviside's dolphins regularly ride the bow wake, while Cape fur seals climb aboard for fresh fish. Most cruises include champagne, fresh Atlantic oysters, and light refreshments.
Kayaking with Seals
Paddle through the calm harbour waters in a sit-on-top kayak alongside hundreds of playful Cape fur seals. The young pups are curious and frequently swim directly beneath your kayak. Early morning departures avoid the afternoon wind and offer the best light for photography.
Pelican Point Peninsula
A narrow sand spit extending into the Atlantic, home to a historic lighthouse and a massive seal colony. The newly built Pelican Point Lodge is the only accommodation on the peninsula — offering complete solitude with seals visible from your room.
Getting There
Walvis Bay International Airport (WVB) receives direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town via Airlink and FlySafair, making it an alternative entry point to Hosea Kutako in Windhoek. The drive from Windhoek is approximately 4 hours (350 km) on a well-paved highway.
Most travelers combine Walvis Bay with Swakopmund (30 minutes north) and Sossusvlei (4–5 hours southeast) as part of a larger Namibia circuit. We recommend 2–3 full days to experience the coastal highlights without rushing.
Route planning layer
How Walvis Bay fits into a Namibia route
The central coast is the easiest place to slow down between desert and wildlife regions, but the best experiences depend on tide, wind, operator safety, and whether you base in Walvis Bay or Swakopmund.
Ideal stay
2-3 nights
Two nights covers a marine activity and Sandwich Harbour. Three nights gives space for Swakopmund, kayaking, weather delays, and a slower coastal reset.
Route position
Between dunes and Damaraland
Walvis Bay and Swakopmund usually sit between Sossusvlei and Damaraland or the Skeleton Coast, breaking up long gravel drives.
Booking priority
Tides and wind
Sandwich Harbour depends on tide windows, while kayaking and cruises are usually better in the calmer morning. Choose dates before locking the activity sequence.
Where to base yourself on the coast
| Option | Best for |
|---|---|
| Walvis Bay base | Marine cruises, kayaking, flamingo lagoon, Pelican Point, and shorter transfers to Sandwich Harbour. |
| Swakopmund base | Restaurants, activities, architecture, tour offices, and a livelier coastal stay. |
| Pelican Point stay | Solitude, seals, lighthouse scenery, and a distinctive lodge experience. |
Before you book
- Confirm tide timing for Sandwich Harbour before choosing the activity date.
- Ask whether hotel pickup, park permits, meals, and safety gear are included.
- Book morning marine activities where possible to reduce wind risk.
- Leave buffer time if driving from Sossusvlei before an activity day.
- Check whether the operator cancels or reroutes in unsafe coastal conditions.
